Get ready, this idea will blow your mind! Canned Brownies!
You put brownies in a can and pressure cook them, then anytime you want fresh brownies you open a can and put it in the microwave for a couple seconds and it seriously tastes like brownies right out of the oven...and they make great gifts...and food storage...or not, but when one of the elders told us about it I was like, GENIUS!
Also, I got that last package!!! yeaaaa!!! Thank you so much! I can hear dad's voice when I read the stories! The packages are so cute!

So, this week was a rollercoaster.  First, let me start off with a miracle.  Like a crazy miracle.  So, it was on Wednesday and right before lunch we were chaomening in a new area we'd found, but with no success.  I headed towards my bike, ready for lunch but heard Sister Chu talking to someone.  I walk back to her talking to this older nanshang.  He's not super interested but while we're talking to him this lady rides up on a motorcycle and joins the conversation.  The guy leaves and we keep talking to this lady.  Her husband and only son are dead and she lives all alone.  She used to be Catholic but changed to Quaker because it didn't feel right.  She doesn't go to church any more because she doesn't feel like Quaker is right either.  We asked if we could pray with her and she said, "Sure!  Come to my house" and she led us over to her house.  We shared the whole first lesson with her and she was so touched.  She said she's had that question (Why do we have so many churches all saying different things?  Which one is true?) for a while.  Then she told us about a dream she had the night before about her in a field of water and her motorcycle fell over.  Her husband cane to help her up and she asked him why he was here.  He told her he had been looking for her for forever.  Then she said she was having a conversation with Christ.  She told him she didn't know where He was anymore.  He then told her not to worry because He would find her.  We showed up the next day.  When we invited her to be baptized she agreed and said, "I only want to be baptized exactly like Jesus was."  I still have to ask myself if it actually happened.  I know miracles like this happen because I hear about them every week...I just never thought they would happen to me.
Well, that's all I have time for this week!  Love you all...more next week  :)

You know, sometimes angels are HUGE trucks that ride along next to us and keep other cars from running us over ;) it's the little things right? or the big things.
On the 1st day of Christmas the dear Lord gave to me, Jesus Christ the new born king!!!
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! I hope everyone had an awesome week filled with miracles and gift giving! We had a Christmas conference on Christmas Eve and it was so much fun...so much food!!!
We were able to go on exchanges with the temple sisters and you learn a lot from them. Training ends this week. I made a goal last interview to finish Phase 1 by the end of last transfer, but I didn't make it. Lesson 4 took longer than expected. I got everything done that I could with my trainer last week. All I have left now is the things I need a zone leader or sister Training leader to pass me off on. Hopefully I'll get that done in the next couple weeks. I really enjoyed training. It helped me learn a lot about missionary work and how to improve myself. Something I've found is there's so many things I want to improve on that I don't really know where to start so I bop back and forth...getting nothing done. I just need to focus on one thing and improve that and slowly add more things in with it. I just want to be a PMG (Preach My Gospel) missionary. Like it says in the BOM, 'by small and simple things are great things brought to pass.' I'll improve and change little by little.
I got to call home this week! it was sooo nice.  The first time I called they didn't answer.  Before I broke down I tried one more time and Tim answered.  He looked really confused...then he ran into the other room.  All of a sudden I heard screaming as Hailey and Mom are racing to the computer...love them!

I have not gotten the other package.  I'm not sure when I'll get it because I'm in Taidong so the only time we get mail is when someone goes to Taipei...which the zone leaders are going for Jedi council this week so maybe!!!
It was sooo nice to talk to you all!!! I've been on my mission for about 6 months! and I'm still not fluent! This language is so hard. And time flies by sooo fast! and yet so slow! Monday comes around and I'm like already...but then the last Monday feels so far away.
We had a Christmas conference in Taipei and they had sooo much food :) It was soo yummy :) Not as good as home, but as close as I can get...and it was American so I can't complain. Also, there were these slide shows with some really embarrassing pictures...thanks mom :)
Sister Chu and I had exchanges with the Temple sisters. I was with sister Perkins and I really like her and her style of missionary work. She makes things so real when she's talking to people. She is just like  "Hey! want to hear about Christ and how he can help you?" It wasn't awkward or anything. I've been looking at ways to improve my transition. I think the thing I struggle with most is street contacting and stoplight contacting because you don't have a lot of time to contact them and you want to both tell them about the gospel to get them interested and ask them questions to make them feel like you're interested in them . It's a hard balance to find, one that I haven't found yet but am still working on. Also, we don't have a lot of street contacting opportunities down here in Taidong. There just aren't a lot of people on the streets.
Miracles happen every day, we just have to look for them! I love you all and pray for you!
keep up the good work over there! Those missionaries you look over are so lucky ;)

If anybody tells you it doesn't get cold in Taiwan, set their pants on fire, because they're lying.
It does get cold her believe it or not.  I was a little shocked because the summer is so brutal and I don't remember it being this cold when I lived in Okinawa.  And it rains....brrrr!

I've come to realize the importance of church.  The investigators that come to church progress so much faster that next week.  When we go to church we are able to feel that spirit.  Even if it's not a super great meeting or what the teacher is teaching is something you've heard a million times when you show that effort to come to church the Lord blesses you and you're able to feel that spirit throughout the week.

We have three investigators with a baptismal date...maybe four but I think she died as an investigator...but we'll get to that later.  Our three investigators with a baptismal date are Chen Jie Mie (an old Catholic near our house. She was just like, 'yea! I'll be baptized!'), Gao Yu Chen (a Tongxue we've been working with.  When we invited him to set a date he told us to wait and then actually went and checked on his calendar and told us if we did it at 7 he could do it.  The only problem is getting him to come to church, and then a Wang Tongxue (another Tongxue who's already Christian and has been to church already and loves it). They aren't going to be until January and February, so we'll have to have a white January and February.  We have a couple other people who we'll invite or will help continue to progress, but those three are our most likely.

So the crazy thing that happened this week.  We went over to a Yang Tongxue's house this saturday to teach her.  She lives at her grandma's house.  She is so curious about the Book of Mormon and was excited to learn.  We were reading with her when we hear the door open, but we didn't think too much about it.  Lots of random people keep coming in and out.  All of a sudden we hear this gruff voice bark, "What are you doing?" (in chinese) We turn and I assumed it was her father.  We told him we were reading scriptures and he went off on this huge rampage and pretty much kicked us out of the house.  He accused us of not believing in Christ and God.  After we left he came out of the house with the Book of Mormon that Yang Tongxue had been reading from and told us pretty much to come and get our devil book.  Then he continued to ma (scold/yell) us about how horrible we are and how we seperate ourselves from people...yea.  So that was a rough day. It made us really sad to see someone with so much potential stopped from learning about the gospel and the blessings she could have had because of her father.

We also had exchanges this week and it was really nice to see another missionary's way of contacting and teaching.  You can learn a lot from just watching people.

So I have a cold :( It's not super bad, but it kind of stinks. So far I've gotten the Christmas package with the Christmas hat and the one from the RS that's a pillow case...soooo adorable! Also, I've pretty much been on my mission for 6 months! Only about a year left! and I'll be coming home right after Christmas so maybe they'll send me home right before Christmas! That would be cool.  I'll just come home on Christmas Eve and be everyone's Christmas present.  That would be cool...or you could just wrap me up and when everyone gets in the room I'll just pop out of the box :)

This week was cold, but I have hot chocolate so it's all good.  I'm going to Taipei this Christmas Eve for a Christmas conference so that basically means they combine Christmas and Thanksgiving food...so much food...American delicious food! Potatoes, turkey, all the good stuff. I'll probably get the other package then because it sends them to the mission office and whenever someone goes to Taipei from our zone they get mail for everybody.  So yea, hopefully it'll be there when I go :)

I'm so excited to talk to you! I'll be calling from 9-10 am my time which is around 6-7 pm your time on Christmas day! I talked to the mission president but he didn't really respond so that kind of stinks.

Well that's about it for this week! I hope you all have a very merry Christmas and remember who is important in life and why we have christmas.  It's all because of Him.  Christ is the reason! He loves us enough to come to Earth.  Everything He did on Earth was for us.  Remember he was the first gift.

Love,
Yu Jie Mei

Christmas Day I will be calling you guys around 9:00 AM my time on the 26th.  Can you send my your Skype name just in case I can't use my Skype account.  Just a precaution.  If dad isn't going to be there on Christmas is there a day he will definitely be home? Maybe I can get the mission president's permission to call on that day...we'll see.

Do you know what the scripture on my plaque is? I chose it when I got my wisdom teeth out so I don't remember :)

I GOT A PACCKKAAGGEE!!!!!!!!! ACTUALLY TWO, one from the Kallmeyers that's this pillow case with a whole buch of names on the back. adorable and made me cry :)  and the other one.  they sent our packages to the sister's apartment so they'll bring it to me on Tuesday :)

You guys are always in my heart.  I've given my heart to the Lord for safekeeping while I'm on my mission, so I've also given you all to him for safe keeping:)

SHENMEDONGXI?! why does everything happen while I'm gone?! seriously! That's crazy Martin came to visit.  What are his plans? How's Tim doing?

So, let me tell you about one of my favorite games.  So, everything here is in Chinese, right? I can't read Chinese.  Also, my companion can't read Chinese.  So, when we go places to eat, I have NO idea what's on the menu and don't want to ask the person what everything is.  So here's the game.  You just randomly put your finger on one and ask for it :) And you have no idea what you're getting or if it's going to be good. fun, right? Sometimes it turns out great and you get something delicious and other times it doesn't taste so great, but it's all in the adventure.  Yep, that's my game.  It's quite fun :)

Our baptised investigator FINALLY got confirmed yesterday.. Hallelujah! he then gave us this fruit that is a pineapple and a custard apple breed together. Delicious!!!

So a couple months ago the Elders moved apartments to one closer to everything.  Well, the zone leaders called us on Thursday and told us they were coming over tomorrow with some stuff from the old Elders apartment because our house/apartment is big enough to hold it.  We were like okay.  What they didn't tell us was they were pretty much bringing a whole apartment worth of stuff over.  So now we have 3 HUGE whiteboards/chalkboards, blankets and pillows, a couch, a bed, 4 desks, and a whole buch on dongxi.  It was fun to have everything moved in, but they also brought another fridge.  Our freezer door is hard to open so I go to open the freezer door to the other fridge to see if it's better.  As the door swings open this smell hits me.  The fridge hadn't been cleaned! There was mold and nasty black stuff growing in it. hot water, bleach, soap, and rubber gloves later it's finally clean.  That was fun.

It's funny to see the competition between other churches.  We knocked at this one lady's house and started to share our message and give her one of our tracts and she tells us to wait a sec.  She goes inside and comes out with this HUGE calendar and told us another church gave it to her.  I'm like, yea? well our church is true and God loves you and you can be sealed to your family and be with them FOREVER!!!

We had some investigators at church this week. FINALLY!!! Miracle one. A less active/recent convert that ran off to Gaoxiang showed up at church. Miracle two.  we got to meet this less actives mom who is also less active but wouldn't talk to us before. miracle three.

The gospel is true!! It is so amazing and it changes lives! It brings hope to a helpless soul.  It heals.  It helps you find joy!

I only have five minutes left before the computer shuts off, so hopefully you get this before it shuts off!!! I love you all!!! Tell dad I'm sorry but I'll send him an extra long message next week :) Tell kai I love him...and everyone else.  I can't wait for Christmas!!! You are all so amazing and wonderful and I couldn't ask for a more amazing family!

Have an amazingly spectacular week!!!

YES!!! wow...this is so much different from just emailing you...because I know you're on another computer right NOW talking to me....wow I miss you guys! Christmas is going to be hard.... I started singing christmas music this week but stopped because it reminded me of home too much :)

I'm dreaming of a white christmas..... well, you know how I was talking about how hot it is here? well, Wednesday to Friday took a 180 degree turn and was FREEZING!!!!! BRRRR!!! but it's pretty nice today so I think I'll survive :)
One miracle this week was on Wednesday. We had an hour left and weren't exactly sure where to go. We prayed about it and felt like going to binglang lu. After the prayer and a quiet moment to thing Sis. Chu says, "We'll find a nanshang (young man if you can't understand my bad spelling of chinese) er shi sui" I was a little taken aback, but didn't want to be the weak link so I just prayed in my heart for enough faith to find him. Literally as soon as we got on binglang lu we saw this guy walking alone in the dark up the slope. So naturally we stopped to talk to him. He's in Taidong for three weeks and then will move to Hualian. He told us a little about his life and we talked to him about the gospel. We then invited him to pray and he gave one of the most personable first prayers I've ever heard; very grateful for sending us to him and such. crazy things happen

so transfers were this week and not a whole lot of people transfered.  Everybody in Taidong stayed except one sister that was going home.  So I'm still in Taidong, but there is a slight chance there could be a mid transfer transfer thingy because that's when all of my generation are finishing training, so to be continued...

This week during zone meeting President Day's goal is for us to have a 'white' christmas which means two baptisms per companionship.  They told us to ask for miracles.  So that's what we did.  We found a LOT of miracles this week, we were on a spiritual high. Then sunday hit and we had NO INVESTIGATORS at church...not even our baptized investigator came to get confirmed...again....it was pretty rough.  This means we have nobody for December.  But no need to fear because all we need is faith and hard work...and some formers or others who have been to church at least once before.  The Lord will provide a way for us to accomplish the things he has asked us to do.

Something I've learned this week is power through the rough times.  Sometimes we don't see the miracles in our lives, but they're there. We just have to look.

Do you know how to get rid of stinky on a watch band?  I sweat and it's making my watch stink but I don't know how to clean it because it's leather.  Any ideas?

I'm being ripped in two. I love missionary work and doing the Lords work and Taiwan, but I miss home and you guys so bad it hurts. Especially now during the Christmas season. I have two parts of my heart that don't fit together. I just have to power through because I only have around a year left and then it's over. Then I start my life again. This is the Lord's time, but it's SOOO hard to devote all this time to Him. It's hard to focus, but I'm learning! It'll slowwwwly get better, then I'll be going home. It'll be over before I know it :) :(
. I Love you so much. I don't know what I would do if you didn't email me every week. You and mom are that constant ever present love. I don't know what I would do without it. I love hearing about the good and bad things of your life, because it means you're still human and still there and telling me things. Have an amazing week!!!

I know I'm where I'm supposed to be.  I know the Lord is watching and protecting you while I'm here.  I know He loves us and this is the best place for me to be right now.  HAVE A GREAT WEEK!!!!

That's about it for this week! Love you all and have an amazing week! STAY WARM!

Faith is the power
Obedience is the price
Love is the motive
The Spirit is the key
Christ is the reason.

I'm learning how true this little poem is.  This week was a faith learning and building week. Faith has so much power.  You need it for everything in missionary work.  You need faith to find, faith to hit those goals you set in daily planning, faith that there ARE people you will meet today that are prepared for you.  Faith is the power, and without you don't get anything done.  Yes people will still reject you, but as long as you keep that faith alive inside you, you WILL find those prepared

We had a baptism this week!!! Our investigator, Wang dixiong, beat the odds and made it to the baptismal font! It was a really cool experience because I was able to see the whole process.  This is one of the ones we found personally (actually he found us, but whatever) and taught and baptised all the way through.  Another cool thing is one of the other Elders from the MTC in my branch that is being trained as well had a baptism on the same day.  So san fan hui (third branch) baptised two people this past saturday.  Since she was a girl we helped her get ready and such.  When it was time for Wang Dixiong to get baptised we went to look through the door to the girl's bathroom and it was LOCKED!!! Elder Mansell baptised our investigator WITHOUT US!!! GAH! but he made it. only had to get baptised once (even though after he was fully immersed his feet flew up out of the water).  I'll get over it.  We then took about 30 minutes teaching him how to tie a tie :) knowing how does come in handy :) Then the next day (sunday) he missed Church...so he missed his confirmation...so now we have a baptised investigator -__-

Since elections were this week every night...and morning...pretty much all day sounds like a war zone with all the firecrackers and fireworks people let off...like a machine gun! And I don't think they have any rules with fireworks because they seriously had a fireshow RIGHT outside our apartment.  It was SO loud, but it was really cool to see the fireworks up close.

This story is especially for Emily. Last Thursday I was at the Ward Mission Leader's house and I see a  Mitsubishi Delica back up, and guess what?! Every time he put the car into back up mode it would do kind of what our van does with the beeping...except it plays really high pitched jingle bells!!! BAHAHAHA!!! it made me think of you Emily, I can just imagine your face if our car had that :)

This week we were able to do an unplanned act of service.  We helped one of our members make jam.  The fruit was some kind of cactus fruit flower thing so we had to wear gloves when we pitted it. IT was really cool and it tasted like rhubarb jelly...just a little bit sour :)

My companion reminded me of a quote by President Monson, "Sometimes courage is that little voice at the end of the day that says, 'I'll try again tomorrow'" I really like this quote and it's totally true.  Sometimes we go through the day trying our hardest and nothing gets done.  Sometimes our best isn't good at all.  But it's all in the enduring.  Even when things get rough, you stick them out, keep going. Don't give up or quit.  There's always tomorrow to do better.

**HAPPY DECEMBER!!! I'M SO EXCITED TO TALK TO YOU THIS MONTH! JUST A COUPLE MORE DAYS TILL I GET TO SEE YOUR BEAUTIFUL FACES!!! I'll tell you about the crash then, because I couldn't describe it adequately if I tried to describe it to you over email.

I have found something delicious. RED BEANS!!! they are so good.  They have red bean candy, red bean baozi's, read bean smoothies. I think I'm addicted.  Also, dong gua cha which is this brick you put in a little boiling water so it's a super concentrated solution then you pour a little in a cup and fill the rest with water...it's Soooooooo good :) I'll have to send you some.

Last but not least, we went to the beach last week.  It's been pretty hot here.  We went with some other sisters and had a blast! I love the beach :) and i got some pictures to prove it.

Well, that's about all for this week.  We have transfers this friday.  I think I'm staying here with Sister Chu, but we'll see what the Lord has planned.  I love you all and pray for you! I hope you all stuffed yourselves with stuffing and turkey :) and play in the snow, fall leaves, or whatever you may find yourself in over there!

PS: a quote from my district meeting, "The scriptures are like a "How to Be Like Jesus" manual, but sometimes it's hard to kan de dong (understand) so the first presidency gave us PMG (Preach My Gospel).  IT's like a "How To Be Like Jesus for Dummies" :D

Have a great week!

Well, I love you all!!! Hope you have a fantastic week!

Monday, November 24. 2014

Well, I'd just like to start of by telling you you are amazing.  I was thinking about you and dad during sacrament meeting (I don't understand a whole lot so my mind wanders) and I was thinking of all you've done for me.  You have seriously ALWAYS been there for me and I just want to thank you for that.  You and Dad are with me every day.  I have conversations with you guys every day on my bike.

This week I cooked my first meal.  They don't have ovens here...just stoves and a wok thingy, so I made this stir fry stuff that was delicious. We also had Thanksgiving this week as a branch and it was delicious! My companion ate a chicken head and I ate a duck head.  Apparently those things you can eat it all, you just suck and chew and...well yea that's about it. I've decided to make it one of my goals to learn how to make Taiwanese food because a lot of it is so yummy!

We spent around  45 minutes on our bikes going uphill to upper Binglang. I t is so gorgeous up in the mountains!. Also, these grasshoppers (the big ones if you remember from Okinawa) kept jumping on me a couple nights ago.  It was weird and I almost crashed my bike trying to get one off me. I'm sure it was funny  to watch.

We did a service project this week for an LA.  We were prying cement blocks up from the ground that the tree roots had displaced so some of the roots were growing in the cement blocks.  I put my 'dad' hat on trying to figure out the easiest way to get the blocks out.  Work smarter, not harder.  Besides ooing and ahhing over how cute my face was, the two Asian ladies that were helping us were also going crazy about how strong I was and calling me superwoman.  I'm not even that strong! It was pretty funny to watch them pull out different implements of death to lift the blocks.  HUGE picks, hatchets, knives on sticks, hammers, screwdrivers, the list goes on and on.

This week was a roller-coaster, man oh man was it a roller-coaster.  Plus, I ate some pretty crazy stuff this week: 100 year old egg (it wasn't as bad as everyone says it is), pig blood ( this is why you don't ask what you're eating, you just eat it because it's good), and a duck head...that's what it looked like.  So they're not super crazy, just another part of the adventure.  This week was Thanksgiving so I hope you all had a yummy time eating your way through turkey and other such foods :) The branch I'm serving in put on a Thanksgiving party and man oh man Taiwanese people can cook some GOOD food! All of us missionaries(12 of us) put on a play of how Thanksgiving came to be.  It was pretty funny, and everyone loved it.

It's still hot here. I'm not sure how I'm going to survive the summer if this is the winter. I guess with a lot of water and more water. This week was a very trying week with it's ups and downs, but we made it through with the Lord's help. This week I've learned a little bit more about how faith works. We need it for everything. We need it to believe the spirit IS guiding us to prepared people and that we ARE being led to those who need to hear this message. This week was full of a lot of doors and hands in our faces telling us no, so it was really hard to keep that faith going that the Lord is indeed helping us in our efforts and while they may reject this glad message now, hopefully they will accept in the future.

Even with all the rejections this week we did have miracles. We dropped by one of our investigator's house last night who we were pretty sure had died as an investigator because she was never around. When we visited last night we finally met with her and she agreed to have us come back. We bore testimony about the Book of Mormon and how she can know our message is true by reading it. The same thing happened with another investigator we have that's a couple doors down. He hasn't been home when we drop by so we thought he had 'died' as well. When we visited him yesterday we found out he fell off the roof this morning. We were able to teach him and bear testimony. There was also this lady we started talking to while we were riding our bikes (she was on her bike too) who was Indonesian Christian. She invited us to come visit her and stopped to give us her number. Even with all the trial of this week I still know the Lord puts prepared people in our path.

Well, that's my update for the week.  I don't have a lot of time...as usual...so maybe next time I'll give you details about the crash...thingy
